Exactly, it's one thing if you have a friend who geniunely doesn't mind you making faux-racist remarks at him/her - this is clearly ironic and isn't going to stir up bad feelings - your friend knows that you don't mean it and that if anything you are derriding the racists.
HOWEVER, when you are in a public space (which would include public spaces on the internet, such as this forum) it is totally different... You wouldn't walk up to a guy and his boyfriend on the street and say "How's it going, FAGS?", you wouldn't walk up to a black guy and say " 'sup Nigger?", you wouldn't walk up to someone with a physical disability and say "How goes, SPASTIC?". Just as you wouldn't expect anyone to walk up to you and make off-colour remarks about your mother, knowing that your mother was dead. And yes, it is exactly the same - when you make a racial slur to someone you see you know exactly what you're talking about in the same way someone privvy to the information you just disclosed would know that making jokes about your mother is likely to cause hurt and anguish for you.
It shouldn't matter whether it's 1908, 1998, 2008 or 3008 - the fact that it was culturally acceptable to enslave non-caucasians and treat them in abusive and demeaning ways 100 years ago doesn't make it right today.
